I like to focus on monumental and heroic figures that are not bound by the laws of physics. A strong pose represents humanity at its best. I strive to look deeper at capturing the expression between mind and body in an attempt to transcend the medium by turning ceramic, stone or metal into flesh. The figure is more than just a body in motion it is also a mind at work. I generally don’t concern myself with scale relationships within a sculptural piece, In that respect the image becomes a little surreal. Jeff’s affection for the art of modern fantasy illustrators along with his interest in architecture and lost civilizations, is realized with his architectural figure series. (Monumental Men and City of Angels) The brick armature is revealed exposing the craftsmanship of a culture that built figurative monuments. You also see through this Jeff’s own connection with his background as a craftsmen engineer. The layers breaking away abstracts the figure and a host of interesting dynamics come into play… Attention to beauty lost is heightened. The juxtaposition between hard and soft is like the layers of the human personality or character. Inner strength is stronger than flesh and bone.
Biography: Jeffery Hall learned precision craftsman skills in the industrial shops of Detroit. He later moved to Baltimore where he received his BFA from the Maryland Institute of Art. Hall worked his way threw college as an airbrush artist; painting wild visions on the curved metal of show cars and motorcycles. As A craft major he mastered the techniques for wood, clay, acrylics and metal to depict his subjects. After graduating he assisted sculptor Frederick Hart, where he honed his figurative skills. Hall has received numerous museum sculpture awards. His ceramic sculpture has been shown internationally and his architectural sculpture adorns government buildings, churches and estates in and around the Washington D.C. area, as well as the east coast, including commissions for the US capitol building, The Marin Corp administration building, and the Washington National Cathedral, Washington DC
